New Chesterfield building business Local business, Mark Holmes Building and Joinery, draws on its founder’s 36 years experience in the domestic and commercial construction industry.  Mark is one of the entrepreneurs supported by the “Work for Yourself” programme funded by Chesterfield Borough and Bolsover District Councils. Mark said, “I started as a joinery apprentice and ended up running my own sub-contracting business for more than ten years.  I was the site manager of multi-million pound projects such as re-fitting leading supermarkets and large residential developments.  On the domestic side, much of my work was at the top end: prestigious homes in London and Derbyshire and some listed buildings.  But I was off work for over a year until surgery sorted out my knee problem.  Now I have brought together a strong team of specialists covering bricklaying, electrics and plumbing to add to my own joinery skills.  We are already developing projects with customers interested in new extensions and conservatories.  But we also take on smaller jobs such as loft conversions, kitchen fitting, hard landscaping, patios and driveways – all at very reasonable prices.” He is keen to re-start his career and explained, “I wanted to get off benefits: I get bored and need to be doing something.  I prefer to be hands-on and am looking forward to being back on the tools.  We take pride in the quality of our work.” Mark welcomed the help he had received: “My Business Adviser has been really useful.  Although I was self-employed before, lots has changed over the last few years.”
